Embracing Sustainability: A Wilde Thyme Approach To Floral Design

No Floral Foam Since 2019

Here at Wilde Thyme we've long been champions of sustainability in floristry - we were the first florist in Jersey to stop using toxic floral foam - instead we use environmentally friendly techniques and mechanics in our floral designs. We haven’t used Oasis- Floral foam since July 2019, as it’s proven to be both toxic and non compostable.

Picture this: instead of plastic foam, our arrangements find their footing (as nature intended) in water-filled vessels.

These vases not only cradle our blooms with care but also allow them to drink deeply, staying fresh and vibrant for longer without harming the planet.

Larger Flower Installations: Prioritising Reusable Solutions

For larger creations, we turn to nature-inspired mechanics like reusable chicken wire and tubes or agra wool. Check out a BTS Instagram highlight for stunning wedding installations designed without using floral foam!

Here materials provide sturdy support without the need for toxic materials. With a dash of creativity and a sprinkle of innovation, our designs come to life, echoing the harmony of the natural world.

Here are other ways we work with the environment in mind:

  • We implement strict flower protocols to minimize waste, ensuring that any excess is minimized or repurposed. Any waste produced is carefully sorted for recycling, reuse, or composting. For event florals, we often collaborate with The Floral Angels, who transform arrangements and distribute them to care homes, spreading joy and beauty to those in need.

  • Our packaging is entirely recyclable, and any necessary “cellophane” used for hydration purposes is fully 100% compostable. Unlike traditional methods, we refrain from storing our flowers in refrigerators, reducing energy consumption. In fact, we deliberately relocated our premises to a cooler environment, eliminating the need for excessive air conditioning and reducing energy consumption. As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability, we are working towards transitioning our Wilde Thyme delivery fleet to electric vehicles..

  • We donate monthly to Durrell’s successful Rewilding project to help off set some of our carbon foot print. Whilst we use locally grown flowers where possible, we do import flowers, from our Dutch Supplier.

So, join us in our quest to spread the Wilde Thyme ethos far and wide. Say goodbye to Oasis floral foam and hello to a greener, more glorious future for floral design.
